Oceanside Community
Oceanside, California is a thriving community that provides all the conveniences of a modern city without the disadvantages. Located just 35 miles (56 km) north of San Diego and 83 miles (133 km) south of Los Angeles, Oceanside offers a unique combination of outstanding location, well-priced available land and multiple resources.
In 1798, Father Fermin de Lasuen founded Mission San Luis Rey, which was destined to become a national landmark and an important part of California history. The mission still stands, just three mile outside present-day Oceanside.
Mission San Luis Rey and its surrounding land became part of a large Mexican land grant in the 1800s. A small town developed around the mission, and visitors began flocking to the community after the railroad came in the 1880s. Going to the “ocean side” was a popular retreat for families living in the warmer inland areas. The two words eventually merged to “Oceanside,” and the city was incorporated in 1888.

Much of the original land grant was sold to the U.S. government in 1942 to build Camp Pendleton, the nation’s largest Marine Corps Base. Today, Oceanside’s economy is a mix of military, agriculture and tourism.
Oceanside is blessed with more than six miles of spectacular ocean frontage, although the tide and sandy bluffs limit the usable beaches. Moonlight Beach, the main city beach, is at the base of Oceanside Boulevard. Other beaches are accessed by elaborate stairway systems leading down from Neptune Avenue.
